The Role.

My client is a market leader in the UK for commercial lighting connection and control products. An opportunity has arisen for a Sales and Specification Engineer to join the team, promoting the full and diverse suite of products to: M&E Consultants; End Users (e.g., universities, hospitals etc.); Electrical Contractors and Wholesalers in the South West region of England.

The role is to maintain existing business and develop new opportunities, with an emphasis on:


  • Raising brand awareness and building strong business relationships
  • Demonstrating the product portfolio’s features & benefits
  • Gaining written specification for  products via the M&E Consultant route
  • Assisting all disciplines in the sector with product knowledge and selection

The position requires a proactive, friendly, enthusiastic, and confident personality. A desire to be customer facing coupled with a technical bias are two factors key to success in this role.

Job Title               Sales and Specification Engineer

Location               Home based in the South West

Reporting to       National Sales Manager

Salary                    £40,000-£45,000 + Bonus + £6,600 Car allowance

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities.


  • Grow the South West business by maintaining / improving existing business relationships and forging new, as yet untapped ones
  • Ensure all appropriate clients in the South West, current and potential, are aware of the brand, growing product portfolio and service offering
  • Work to hit, and where possible exceed, annual sales and gross profit targets
  • Liaise with office-based colleagues in order that activities in the South West are progressed in an efficient and professional manner
  • Share relevant and key information, gained as a result of activities in the South West, with  field sales colleagues to ensure opportunities that may arise locally are maximised company-wide e.g. a gaining of a national specification
  • Complete and submit all administration on time and as required
  • Maintain the security and confidential status of all information so designated; to always conduct all activities in a professional manner and ensure procedures are followed.
  • Understand and complete all work-related documentation accurately and on time
  • Understand and comply with policies and procedures
  • Carry out work in a safe and diligent manner
  • Attend and fully participate in training and appraisal activities as required
  • Work in accordance with the intentions and requirements of the Equal Opportunities policy.
  • Work in accordance with Health & Safety Policy.
  • Undertake any other duties that may reasonably be requested.

Skills Profile.


  • In depth and up to date knowledge of the South West M&E Consultant, Electrical Contractor, and Electrical Wholesaler sector
  • Technical sales background, preferably in the commercial lighting and controls arena
  • Comfortable arranging and holding face to face meetings / demonstrations
  • Able to communicate clearly at all levels (audience specific)
  • Tenacious / determined
  • Confidence, with the ability to (politely) say “No” when the situation dictates
  • IT – MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • The ability to work to deadlines and time manage proactively

Qualifications/Experience.


  • English and Mathematics to O Level / GCSE standard or above
  • Sound grasp of electrical principles is essential
  • Experience of electrical installation a distinct advantage when communicating with contractors
  • City & Guilds Part 1, 2 (or similar) an advantage, but not essential
