About the Role
We are seeking an experienced SCADA & Communications Engineer to support the design, integration, and delivery of control, automation, and communication systems across HV substation and battery energy storage projects throughout the UK.
This role will play a key part in delivering safe, reliable, and secure energy infrastructure by ensuring robust connectivity between site assets, substations, control systems, and remote monitoring platforms.
Working within an EPC project environment, you will collaborate closely with electrical design, protection, commissioning, and project delivery teams throughout the full project lifecycle - from initial design and engineering through to testing, commissioning, and handover.
Key Responsibilities
Design and develop SCADA and communications architectures for HV substations and BESS installations.
Specify, configure, and integrate RTUs, PLCs, HMIs, and industrial network equipment including switches, routers, and firewalls.
Produce SCADA I/O schedules, communication diagrams, interface control documents, and technical specifications.
Define and implement industrial communication protocols including IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-101/104, DNP3, and Modbus TCP/RTU.
Develop reliable data, control, and telemetry solutions between site assets, substations, DNO/TO networks, and client systems.
Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), commissioning, and system integration activities.
Liaise with network operators and stakeholders regarding telemetry requirements, RTU configuration, and interface acceptance.
Ensure designs meet relevant industry standards, including National Grid, DNO, ENA, and cybersecurity requirements.
Support the integration of BESS controllers, inverters, transformers, auxiliary systems, PPC, EMS, and SCADA interfaces.
Coordinate data exchange requirements between SCADA systems, Power Plant Controllers, Energy Management Systems, and DNO/IDNO interfaces.
Maintain accurate technical documentation and project records using digital project management platforms.
Ensure compliance with relevant health, safety, environmental, and construction legislation, including CDM regulations.
Skills & Experience Required
Essential
Degree or equivalent qualification in Electrical, Electronic, Control, Automation, or Communications Engineering.
Proven experience delivering SCADA and communications systems within HV substations, grid connections, renewable energy, or BESS projects.
Strong understanding of industrial control architectures and communication networks.
Practical experience with RTUs, PLCs, HMIs, and industrial network equipment from leading OEMs.
Knowledge of communication protocols including IEC 61850, IEC 60870, DNP3, and Modbus.
Experience configuring industrial networks, including VLANs, routing, VPNs, and firewall systems.
Experience working within an EPC, design-and-build, or similar project delivery environment.
Understanding of SCADA integration with BESS controllers, inverters, transformers, auxiliaries, PPC, and EMS platforms.
Desirable
Experience with grid code compliance, telemetry requirements, and DNO/NGESO interfaces.
Knowledge of OT cybersecurity standards and best practices, including ISO 27001 or NCSC frameworks.
Experience using digital collaboration or project management platforms.
Chartered Engineer status or working towards professional registration with an appropriate engineering institution.
