Automated Packaging & Inspection Machinery (Food Industry)
Field-Based | A1 Corridor
Salary: £40,000 – £45,000 Basic
OTE: £55,000 – £60,000The Company
We are a UK market leader in the design, manufacture, integration, and servicing of automated packing and inspection systems for the food industry. All machinery is manufactured in-house in the UK, and the business employs over 200 staff nationwide.
Our solutions include complete end-of-line (EOL) packing systems and standalone machines such as:
- Checkweighers
- Metal detection systems
- X-ray inspection machines
- Multihead weighers
- Integrated conveying and packaging solutions
The Role
We are seeking an experienced Service Engineer with a strong electrical and controls bias to carry out installation, commissioning, servicing, and breakdown support on complex automated packaging machinery.
You will be responsible for fault finding across electrical, control, drive, and mechanical systems, working both independently and as part of a wider engineering team. The role covers customer sites along the A1 corridor.
Key Technical Responsibilities
- Installation, commissioning, and validation of automated EOL packaging and inspection machinery
- Electrical fault finding using schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts
- Diagnosis and rectification of PLC, HMI, and control system faults
- Fault finding on digital and analogue inputs and outputs via HMIs and PLC software
- Working with servo drive systems, inverters, and motor control circuits
- Fault finding on AC motors, gearboxes, encoders, and mechanical transmission systems
- Working with pneumatic systems, sensors, actuators, and solenoid valves
- Networking of machines including Ethernet-based communications between PLCs, HMIs, and inspection systems
- Breakdown response, root cause analysis, and implementation of permanent corrective actions
- Supporting upgrades, retrofits, and continuous improvement activities
- Providing technical support and training to customer engineering teams
Technical Environment
You will regularly work with:
- PLC-controlled machinery (fault finding and diagnostics level)
- HMIs and operator interfaces
- Servo motors and servo drives
- Variable speed drives (VSDs / inverters)
- Safety circuits, interlocks, and guarding systems
- Single-phase and three-phase power systems
- Industrial sensors (photoelectric, inductive, capacitive, load cells)
- Inspection technologies including metal detection and X-ray systems
The Package
- Basic Salary: £40,000 – £45,000
- OTE: £55,000 – £60,000
- Hours: 40 hours per week
- Overtime:
- Time & ⅓ during the week
- Enhanced weekend rates
- Weekend rota: Typically 1 in 4
- Nights away: Average of 2–3 per week

Candidate Requirements
- Proven experience working on industrial automated machinery
- Strong electrical fault-finding background
- Formal electrical qualification (City & Guilds, NVQ, HNC or equivalent)
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and control drawings
- Experience within packaging, food manufacturing, or inspection machinery preferred
- Comfortable with a field-based service role involving travel and nights away
